How to Calculate Gold (XAUUSD) Lot Sizes Without Blowing Your Account
Gold (XAUUSD) is famous in the trading world for its crazy liquidity and massive daily moves. Many traders love it because you can hit your weekly profit target in just one good setup. But if you have traded gold for more than a few days, you know it can completely wipe out your account just as fast.
The biggest reason traders fail their prop firm challenges on XAUUSD is terrible position sizing. They guess their lot size, hope for the best, and get stopped out for a 3% loss instead of the 1% they planned for.
In this guide, we are going to look at how to calculate your gold lot size perfectly every single time.
The Problem with Gold Pips
If you are used to trading regular forex pairs like EURUSD, you probably know that a 10 pip move is a decent little trade. On gold, a 10 pip move can happen in the blink of an eye.
Calculating pips on gold is slightly different than forex. For XAUUSD, a 1 pip move is a $0.10 change in the price of gold. If gold moves from $2400.00 to $2400.10, that is exactly 1 pip. If it moves from $2400.00 to $2401.00, that is a $1 move in the raw price, which equals 10 pips.
The XAUUSD Lot Size Formula
To figure out your lot size, you need to know three specific numbers:
- Your Account Size: Let’s say you have a $100,000 funded account.
- Your Risk Percentage: You want to risk exactly 1%, which is $1,000.
- Your Stop Loss in Pips: Your technical analysis shows your stop loss needs to be 30 pips away (a $3 move in the gold price).
In standard forex, 1 standard lot (1.00) pays $10 per pip. Luckily, most modern brokers treat gold the exact same way. For a standard 100-ounce contract, 1 standard lot of XAUUSD equals $10 per pip.
The manual math looks like this: (Risk in Dollars) / (Stop Loss in Pips * Pip Value per Lot) = Lot Size
$1,000 / (30 pips * $10) = 3.33 Lots
If you take a buy position with 3.33 lots and the trade hits your 30 pip stop loss, you will lose exactly $1,000. You are completely protected from taking a massive drawdown hit.
The Easy Way (Stop Doing Manual Math)
Doing manual math while you are trying to execute a fast trade is a bad idea. A simple typo on your desktop calculator can cause you to enter 33 lots instead of 3.33 lots, instantly failing your prop firm challenge.
Instead of guessing or writing down formulas on a sticky note, you should let our system do the heavy lifting.

All you have to do is type in your account balance, type in your stop loss, and the tool will instantly spit out the exact lot size you need to type into MT4 or MT5. It even pulls live exchange rates behind the scenes if your trading account is in EUR, GBP, or JPY instead of USD.
Final Thoughts on Trading Gold
XAUUSD is not incredibly beginner friendly. The spreads can widen rapidly during high impact news events, and slippage is very common. Always give your stop loss a little bit of breathing room. It is much better to use a slightly wider stop loss and a smaller lot size than to get wicked out of a beautiful trade by a random spike.
Stay disciplined, always calculate your risk before clicking the buy button, and let the math protect your account.
