How to Calculate Lot Size for US30 (Dow Jones): A Step-by-Step Guide

Trading US30 (the Dow Jones Industrial Average) is incredibly popular among day traders and prop firm challengers because of its massive daily volatility. However, that same volatility is what blows most accounts. If you do not know how to size your positions correctly, one bad spike can hit your daily drawdown limit in seconds.

In this guide, we will break down exactly how to calculate US30 lot sizes so you never risk more than you intend to.

Understanding US30 Contract Sizes

Unlike regular Forex pairs where 1 standard lot always equals 100,000 units of currency, indices are much trickier. The contract size for US30 varies drastically depending on your broker.

The most common broker setups are:

1. Contract Size = 1: (Often called standard indices). A 1 point move with 1 lot equals $1.
2. Contract Size = 10: A 1 point move with 1 lot equals $10.
3. Contract Size = 100: A 1 point move with 1 lot equals $100.

Before placing a trade, right-click US30 in your MT4 or MT5 Market Watch, select Specification, and look for the “Contract Size”.

The US30 Lot Size Formula

Once you know your contract size, the math is relatively straightforward. To find your perfect lot size, use this formula:

Lot Size = Risk Amount / (Stop Loss in Points x Pip Value)

Let us look at a real example:

• Account Balance: $10,000
• Risk Percentage: 1% ($100 Risk Amount)
• Stop Loss: 50 points
• Broker Contract Size: 1 (Pip Value = $1)

Lot Size = $100 / (50 x $1) = 2.00 Lots

If your broker has a contract size of 10, the same 50 point stop loss would mean a pip value of $10. Your lot size would be: Lot Size = $100 / (50 x $10) = 0.20 Lots
